The Toll of their Reign

By: Ariana Strong

A dauphin and Queen met one day.

Young and beautiful they both were.

Destined to marry since the age of birth.

An alliance their two kingdoms would share.

The two fell in love.

Which neither thought.

They had no real duty to reign.

Both had their predecessor and regent.

Love was in the air.

Anything was possible.

Wedded they were in a few near days.

The dauphin now a King.

The Queen now a wife.

Love and peace flourished.

Prosperity.

How does one love a King?

How does one love a Queen?

How does one be a husband?

How does one be a wife?

How does one be a good King,

but be a good husband?

How does one be a good Queen,

but be a good wife?

One can not.

The King has mistresses.

The Queen has not a voice.

The husband has conflicts.

The wife has secrets.

It is tearing their love apart.

It is tearing their connection.

Tearing their kingdoms in pieces.

Secrets. Secrets. Secrets.

Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.

Relocation, remarriage, removing.

Hardship.

Seperation.

On opposite sides of Europe.

They despised it.

Neither remarried.

A bit of loyalty lingered.

They wished for one another.

King executed the laws.

Queen stayed silent.

King’s kingdom survived.

Queen’s kingdom survived.

King longed for his wife.

Queen longed for her husband.

Together in the afterlife.

Was their one dying wish.

The love of a husband and wife,

are no match for duties of a King and Queen.
